The Keystone SMILES Preschool room

The preschool room is set up for children ages three to five. Teachers plan hands-on learning experiences across the day, with STEM activities built into the mix. Children work at tables, on the floor, and in small groups rather than sitting through long lessons.

A typical session moves between whole-group time, choice time, and quiet work. Children build with blocks, sort and count objects, draw and write, and talk through what they notice. Teachers guide the play so academic, social, and developmental growth happen together.

Eligible families pay nothing for the preschool program. Children ages four and five who live in the Keystone School District can ride the bus to and from the center. Contact the office to ask about your child's eligibility and routes.

What this looks like in practice

Preschool days usually alternate active and quiet stretches. Children arrive, settle in, and start with free choice. Then come group time, table work, snack, outdoor play, and rest. Teachers watch how each child is doing and adjust the pace.

Over a year, the change shows up at home. Children hold a pencil with more control, take turns in conversation, and finish a task they start. They learn to follow a routine away from family, which makes the move to kindergarten less of a jolt.
